Pied Shag – Karuhiruhi

The pied shag is almost as large as the more widely distributed black shag in NZ. In NZ, cormorants are actually referred to as shags instead. The beask has a distinct hook. The species is not under threat and is protected. It deeds on coastal fish and crabs. It is an adept diver and can reach depths of up to 20 metres.
