When it comes to the New Years honours list most of the publicity tends to focus on sportspeople and politicians, many of whom also derive a substantial income from their achievements. Personally, I find it much more interesting to here about those who have achieved honours through dedication to a cause for which they have received no financial recompense, but have been motivated by the need to make the world a better place.

This year, one such person is Vicki Hyde who is now a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to science. Vicki has been a stalwart of NZ Skeptics, for much of the time as Chair-Entity and more recently as the media contact. Over the years she has championed science in the media, particularly when arguing against pseudoscience which she has done articulately and assertively.

Congratulations Vicki.
