When it comes to the New Years honours list most of the publicity tends to focus on sportspeople and politicians, many of whom also derive a substantial income from their achievements. Personally, I find it much more interesting to here about those who have achieved honours through dedication to a cause for which they have received no financial recompense, but have been motivated by the need to make the world a better place.
This year, one such person is Vicki Hyde who is now a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to science. Vicki has been a stalwart of NZ Skeptics, for much of the time as Chair-Entity and more recently as the media contact. Over the years she has championed science in the media, particularly when arguing against pseudoscience which she has done articulately and assertively.
