Hooray – it’s World Science Day!

By Steve Pointing 09/11/2014

Today is World Science Day, I know this because the UNESCO website tells me so.  Unfortunately I am not sure this is going to be high on the radar of many media outlets, or indeed for many science professionals.  This is a shame because it is a great notion, to quote the UNESCO website:

Established by UNESCO in 2001, World Science Day for Peace and Development is celebrated worldwide on 10 November each year. It offers an opportunity to demonstrate to the wider public why science is relevant to their daily lives and to engage them in debate on related issues.” (UNESCO, www.unesco.org)

I shall be leading a “bird walk” for local children today which I hope will be fun, and I will be peppering this with interesting snippets on the local environment – particularly about how we should care for and value our urban green spaces.  Now that I know about this annual event, I plan to coordinate a much greater contribution by New Zealand scientists – so watch this space, and if you are interested please feel free to email me!
