Daily Deals and Altmed Pseudoscience

By Darcy Cowan 09/05/2013

I’ve been noticing the occasional product on the daily deal site I frequent that is, how to put this delicately, BS.

Today I saw one that I just had to have some fun with and hopefully give people some idea of what the product is really about at the same time.

In this case the product was an “Energy Calcium Activation Cup”. I hadn’t heard of these before but the altmed buzzword combo of “energy” and “activation” got my attention.

The forum moderators tend to be quick to remove questions about products that are overtly critical so I had to play a bit dumb and make sure I didn’t get too much to the point. The outcome was quite amusing:

Grabone Magic Cup

You can see the discussion at:
http://www.grabonestore.co.nz/energy-calcium-activation-cup/discuss (or archived at  http://www.webcitation.org/6GTWgpSot just in case the entire thing gets deleted after this post goes live)

I would like to thank the company liaison Sabina Chadliwa who here was very forthcoming and quite speedy in comparison with other companies I have interacted with in this way. No offense is meant to her – but BS is BS.

  • Thanks! I saw that very same energy calcium activation cup today and wondered what on earth it was!

But now I want to know how it “works”!

  • Um, because it’s magic – obviously.

I was actually a bit surprised that it didn’t have the usual “this product is not meant to diagnose or treat disease…. yada yada” in the product description. We got there eventually in the discussion though 🙂

  • I had a similar discussion with a “friend” who was promoting eating only alkaline foods, in order to prevent cancer. I asked what happens once the foods reach your stomach & are mixed with strong acid … no answer.

  • Nice work Darcy, simple questions are a great way to reveal that such products make no sense at all

  • Enhances the water content in what way?
I’m guessing it might be “energy” or “resonance” 🙂
Or maybe the water gets “wetter”?

  • Total number of unit bought was 3, the same number that had been bought once I published this.

Unfortunately, as I feared, the discussion page for this product was completely wiped.
    Wonder when that happened….

  • I was pleased to see “only” 3 sold.

    Then today I saw this:

A new, more concentrated formulation of Double Helix Water is the most potent and concentrated formula ever with 37% more Stable Water Clusters per bottle. Double Helix Water® is a scientific discovery light years ahead of it’s time. Recover faster, feel more energetic, feel younger, manage pain, feel better, think clearer, experience a new level of life, and live to your full potential! Double Helix Water® is a unique, ultra pure water form containing concentrated stable water clusters formed at a microscopic level. Invitro studies show taking just a few drops a day can boost immune function, improve cellular interaction, improve metabolic function, reduce recovery time, increase energy and give one an improved overall feeling of wellness and good health. The important thing to know is that it really works. Research indicates that it operates on a cellular level, providing the body’s cells with a cellular “tune up”, allowing for improved cleaning of waste matter and permitting celular functions to run more cleanly and efficient. It is believed that this is what helps restore cellular metabolic pathways to their optimum, natural levels. “The demonstration of microscopic clusters in water is groundbreaking and revolutionary! Their purification of water, with the atmospheric purity described, places homeopathy on a scientifically valid foundation that is equal at least to the discovery of atomic energy.” – C. Norman Shealy, MD. PhD.” If you want wellness, fitness and health and a naturally balanced body Double Helix Water® can help you acheive these goals. It’s a scientific breakthrough that will have you feeling great, naturally.

It just about does my head in.

  • Absolutely, me too. So an extra big thanks to you & others here for doing something useful to counteract it!

  • This word pusdeoscience gets thrown around a bit, please refrain from using this with cold fusion (unless you want an intellectual scrap because I know there are those that cant see the wood for the trees) aka plasma electrolysis aka LENR aka The atomic hydrogen torch.

  • If you want to compare yourself to a recent US science survey try the test at the following link. You should all get 100% correct, but it does explain how some strange concepts get embedded.

It’s also worth look at the result data, new results aren’t included, but you can compare to the appropriate age profile. Interesting to see how some questions are better answered by old or young.

  • Derek, huh? who mentioned cold fusion?

Bruce, yeah did that a week or two ago (yes 100%). Interesting (read depressing) breakdown of the results.
