As a learning exercise based on Nathan Yau’s excellent tutorials, I made some simple maps of the LINZ road centrelines data in R. If you’re interested, my code is here.

What about “paper roads” Aaron – does LINZ map all of those?
Hi there Peter, LINZ does map paper roads. They can be found in this layer: https://data.linz.govt.nz/layer/818-nz-road-centre-line-electoral/ . You may need to compare this layer with Topo 50 layer Aaron used to draw out what you are looking for, as there is currently no attribute identify paper roads. Hope this helps.
Aaron, nice work with R. Thanks for the contribution in the code as well.
I curse paper roads…. I have not so fond memories of walking straight up above a steep hill full of thick bush above Picton with a slasher and some survey equipment so that one could be surveyed accurately. My colleague was cosily sitting with his theodolite on the balcony of a motel in town watching my slow progress…
ps. Nice R… wish mine was so neat
